GranFondo - 122km

For riders who want to challenge themselves at their own pace, the GranFondo category is 122 km from Vancouver to Whistler at a self-set pace for recreational to advanced riders.

  • Start time 6:50am
  • Start location: Stanley Park, Brockton Point
  • Total Elevation: 1700 metres

Start Location

The GranFondo will start in Stanley Park at Brockton Point (by the totem poles). Vehicle access to Brockton Park will be closed at 5:45am to avoid congestion in the park. Anyone wanting to drop off a rider can use one of the recommended drop off locations which will be announced shortly.

Riders will begin heading west at the Nine O’clock Gun on Stanley Park Drive and continue around Brockton Point Lighthouse, winding along the two-lane road through Stanley Park. Caution is urged at about 2.5km where riders will take a hairpin left turn and start a 3.5% climb for about 1km up Prospect Point hill to make their way onto the Stanley Park Causeway. Once on the causeway, riders will enjoy a spectacular view over the Lions Gate Bridge and up Taylor Way to get onto the upper levels Trans Canada Hwy with a right of way at all intersections. Then the journey begins along the beautiful Sea to Sky highway all the way to Whistler.

Seeding Order

All GranFondo riders are expected to be in position in the start chute 15 minutes before the ride start (6:35am). All riders will be in a controlled start and held at a max speed of 25 km/h until they reach the base of Taylor Way.  At this point, riders will be released to ride. Until that point, sit tight, settle-in and enjoy the escort out of downtown Vancouver. Note: Lions Gate Bridge will be closed to north bound traffic from 6:00am to 8:00am.

Start Corrals

Riders are asked to self-select an appropriate starting position within the start corrals. With thousands of riders, finding the right spot that best matches your fitness level, riding confidence and anticipated finish time is important for a smooth start for everyone.

There will be seven (7) start corrals (see map). The first corral will be for Alta Classe Riders and is restricted. Each successive corral after that will be based on estimated finish time. Riders should take into account estimated stop times at Rest Stops when considering how long it will take to complete the ride. Newcomers who are simply looking to complete the event should be positioned in the final corral. Remember, your official ride time only starts when you cross the start line so it doesn’t matter how far back you begin.

Corral #2 (3.5 + hours)

Corral #3 (4 + hours)

For riders in very good shape who anticipate finishing the ride in 4 to 4.5 hours. Riders in this corral will be familiar with the etiquette of group riding. This is still a fast paced ride (28km/hr to 30km/hr).
